【1548年生まれ ~ 1600年2月17日没】

ジョルダーノ・ブルーノはイタリア生まれの哲学者にして

ドミニコ会の修道士です。ルネッサンスの時代の人で

有名なガリレオ・ガリレイと生きた時代が重なります。

科学者のご紹介という視点からは少しずれますが、

自然観の変遷という観点から科学史の中で論じます。

ブルーノの時代　

 

コペルニクスの時代から時が過ぎ、

教会の世界観は変化しています。

当時のヨーロッパの人々の世界観について

教会が支配的立場をとるのです。その中で、

現代の我々の視点からは当時人々の不合理さは

受け入れ難いです。最終的にはブルーノは

火炙りに処されてしまいます。宇宙は有限ではなく無限で、

地球や太陽も星の中の１つ、というブルーノの考えは

当時の社会的な価値観と合いませんでした。

当時としては不愉快な考えだとも思われたのです。

そして火あぶり。酷い話です。ブルーノは

異端審問を受け、広場で火あぶりになりました。　

ブルーノの信念

 

何よりも、ブルーノは

ドミニコ会の修道士でした。

「神の作りたもう世界は限り無い」

という信念をもっていて、

権威に立ち向かいつつも

彼なりに良心的な判断をして

考え方を構築していったのです。

 

数学的モデルで検証して欲しかった。

実験結果と照らして判断して欲しかった。

科学が得意な人々と議論して欲しかった。

私は勝手に、そう思います。

名誉回復

 

最後に、ブルーノの名誉回復の話です。

20世紀になってヨハネ・パウロ２世の時代に

過去の見直しが成され、ブルーノの処刑は不当である

として、異端判決を取り消しています。新しい発想を

作り出したブルーノが再評価されたのです。

今、ブルーノは思想の自由に殉じた

”殉職者”として評価されています。
